WELCOME TO T.A.G. CAVING AT ITS BEST

This page contains my caving experiences as well as those who have gone caving with me.

Horizontal Caving

Horizontal caving can be thrilling and exciting. They do not require the use of ropes or rappelling gear.Horizontal caves usually have very magnificent formations created by the minerals in the water. They are thousands of years old.Formations consist of stalagmites, stalagtites, flowstone, helectites, draperies, and cave pearls. There are numerous other formations but the are the most seen.

Even though horizontal caves don't require rope there are numerous other challenges, such as climbs, crawls, wading water from ankle to chest deep. There are also numerous creatures you may see.Bats, cave crickets, cave fish, crawfish. These are the most famous.

Verticle Caving

Verticle caving requires the use of ropes, rappelling gear, and climbing gear. The rope is usually the only way in or out. Many cavers refer to the rope as the "nylon highway".These types of caves are called pits. They can open up to the surface, known as open air pits,or they may be located inside of a cave. They range in depth from 10'to 1000'.The deepest pit in the U.S. is inside of Ellisons Cave in Georgia. Its called Fantastic Pit and is 586'deep.

A horizontal cave with numerous pits located inside are called multi-drop caves. Many of these have a large volume of water that flows through them and a wetsuit is required to gaurd against hypothermia. These caves are refered to as sporting caves and require a gret deal of vertical experienced.
